What is it?

"Copal" is a natural resin - a solidified aromatic exudate - most often from the genera Protium and Bursera (family Burseraceae), which grow in the lowland Amazon and the foothills of the Andes of Peru. The resin is collected either:

  • naturally fallen (drops/"tears" on the bark and ground), or
  • by carefully cutting the bark at small intervals so as not to weaken the tree.

Depending on its origin, it varies in color (from light "kopal blanco" to darker "kopal negro") and aroma.

What is it used for?

  • Ceremonial incense and purification: for traditional "limpia" cleansing, protection and harmonization of space.
  • Meditation and prayer: smoke is considered a "bridge" - it helps to focus the mind, quieten down, deepen perception.
  • Rituals of gratitude and abundance: during celebrations, transitions, before new projects.
  • Home aromatization: a warm, honey-balsamic scent creates a cozy atmosphere.

How to use

On carbon (classic form)

  1. Pour a layer of sand/salt into the censer (thermal insulation).
  2. Light a self-igniting charcoal and place it on the sand; wait until it turns gray.
  3. Add a small amount of copal (grain/cap) on top.
  4. Add in small amounts as needed; increase/decrease airflow. (Ventilation is important.)

In mixtures

  • It mixes well with Palo Santo (wood/oil), frankincense (Boswellia) or myrrh - creating a full, sacred scent.
  • To cleanse the home: first digal ("cleanses"), then Palo Santo ("refreshes and softens").

Ritual tip

Before lighting, sit for a moment, state your intention (cleanse, protect, calm) and thank nature. Copal will beautifully prepare the space – it will “cleanse and protect”, and you can combine it with cacao, which will “open the heart” and bring deeper power to the intention.

Safety and care

  • Always use a non-flammable bowl; direct smoke away from children and animals; ventilate.
  • Store in a dry and dark place; the resin will naturally darken and harden over time - that's okay.

Warning

We prefer legal origins and permits (Peru: SERFOR) and harvesting from naturally fallen wood (Palo Santo) or careful collection of resin (copal) without damaging the tree.

By purchasing products, you support the protection of dry forests and Amazonian communities that live in harmony with nature and traditional harvesting.
